As a class, we have come together to raise money by collecting donations to keep the food pantry well-stocked. This school year has been extremely challenging for everyone, especially financially unstable college students. In particular, since the beginning of the pandemic, the campus food pantry has been heavily utilized and it desperately needs new donations. Students in the First Year Seminar on Poverty & Philanthropy have come together to raise money to keep the food pantry well-stocked. A 2018 study revealed that 38% of Salem State students are food insecure—we can do better! 100% of the donations we receive from this crowdfunding campaign will go directly to the food pantry. Help us reach our goal!

Next year, 2020, is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day across our globe and the 20th anniversary at Salem State! Ryan Fisher Earth Days Week 2020 will take place April 13 – 17 at Salem State University. This is a milestone year as we celebrate our 20th festival and globally we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day in 1970. The theme this year is “There is no Planet B.” Over the past year we have seen our Earth’s youth increasingly voicing their concerns over the inability of national governments to implement concrete policies that will minimize the impacts of our activities (including CO2 emissions and land use) on climate change. Our children’s collective voice has been amplified by many young activists including Greta Thunberg of Sweden who delivered a forceful address to the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York City in late September, 2019. Earth Days 2020 will be a week where the broader Salem State Community can unify to achieve a better understanding of how we can all contribute to keeping the planet healthy. This year’s festival includes the annual poster on the Monday, the awards ceremony on the Thursday and numerous other events throughout the week hosted by students, student clubs and numerous academic and non-academic departments. We greatly appreciate any donation that can help us hold this event!

Interdisciplinary Studies Thank you for your support of our Sustaining Peace in Liberia’ crowdfunding project. Due to the recent university-sponsored student travel advisory in response to COVID-19 and the Commonwealth’s state of emergency, this student travel trip has been postponed. Since 2011, nearly 35 students from Salem State University (SSU) have spent spring break in Liberia learning about and helping out people in that equatorial African nation. Students have accompanied SSU faculty from four departments (Interdisciplinary Studies, Education, Biology and Nursing). Activities in Liberia are facilitated through a formal Memorandum of Understanding between SSU and the United Methodist University of Liberia (UMU) established in 2011 and renewed in 2016. During spring semester student will learn about Liberian history, culture, education, health care, jobs and food security. Students learn the average age is 18, 32% of young people are physically stunted due to undernourishment, and 48% live in extreme poverty. Nearly 2/3’s of rural youth are illiterate. The situation for adults is equally dismal; 87% are categorized as “vulnerably unemployed”. Exacerbating this already stressed situation was the Ebola outbreak in 2014-2015, in that time Ebola killed one out every 1,000 Liberians. When students visit Liberia, they apply and share the knowledge gained at SSU (and elsewhere) to help Liberians help themselves. These personalized experiences in Liberia are varied and credited as courses and work ( depending on students major, using the courses IDS 289, BIO 408), which includes reporting on what was done and its relevance. Universally, the Liberian Experience has proven gratifying and rewarding as evidenced by the successes realized by former participants who are now teachers, professors, technicians, nurses and finalizing advanced degrees. To help sustain this experience so other young people can participate, learn, grow and contribute we seek your assistance. Any assistance that you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated!

Student Veteran Organization The Student Veteran Organization at Salem State University is a chapter of The Student Veterans of America (SVA). The SVA is a coalition of student leaders, chapter-based organizations with over 1,500 different chapters across the globe. The SVA helps veterans to make the most of their transition to civilian life, funds scholarships, hosts leadership institutions, conducts groundbreaking research, and more. At Salem State University, our Student Veteran Organization helps to assist military-connected students with their transition into higher education, achieve their educational goals, and go beyond. The members of the Student Veteran Organization are hoping to raise money to help cover any additional expenses during our annual trip to the Student Veterans of American National Conference (SVA). The funds will also be used to enhance our program and help our members become stronger leaders and to better advocate for the military-connected population on campus. Events the organization has hosted in the past include a free campus-wide BBQ, social events at the VFW, and collaborations with the Veterans' Affairs Office. 2019 Fall Nursing Recognition Ceremony

Help the nursing students celebrate their accomplishments with a traditional pinning ceremony. Nursing Pinning ceremonies date back to medieval times when the Monks who cared for the wounded soldiers in 12th-century battles were pinned for their service. The Monks’ pin, a Maltese cross at that time, represented caretaking. Florence Nightingale, the founder of the first nursing school, also was awarded a red Maltese cross for her work in caring for the wounded in the Crimean War. The badge that Florence Nightingale awarded to exemplary nursing students in the 1860s was also a pin in the shape of the Maltese cross. All four sides of the cross were equal and had the appearance of angel wings. The pinning ceremony –also known here at Salem State as the recognition ceremony in nursing is the most significant event for nursing school graduates. After years of very hard work and study, students from the BSN program and the RN to BSN program who participate in this celebration say that this ceremony is more meaningful to them than their university graduation. This is the moment when a nursing faculty member – whom the class has selected – will award the nursing school pin to each nursing graduate, one at a time. This ceremony marks the first time that a nursing student finally becomes in name and title “nurse.” As faculty award the school of nursing pin to each nursing graduate individually, the placement of the pin symbolically conveys the transfer of the faculty’s nursing knowledge, skill, attitude, and professionalism. The placement of the pin also represents the time-honored tradition of welcoming the new nurse into the profession of nursing.

We are students in the First Year Seminar class on Global Poverty and Charitable Giving at Salem State University. Our goal is to raise at least $600 for our university’s food pantry. The food pantry provides basic essentials such as food and toiletries to students who are unable to afford them for any reason. Why do we want help? Hunger on-campus often goes unnoticed. Yet, many college students struggle with food security. In a study done by the Wisconsin HOPE Lab in 2018, 38% of SSU students said they were food insecure and 36% were housing insecure. Additionally, most students don’t even know about the food pantry. Help us spread awareness about hunger on-campus and make an impact in the lives of fellow students. Salem State Women's Basketball is a hard working and dedicated division 3 NCAA team that competes in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference. This year’s Salem State Women’s Basketball roster represents a journey back to the future as it is one of the youngest groups the program has put forth in quite a while. Featuring a great blend of 5 freshmen, 2 sophomores, 3 juniors, and 3 exceptional Senior Captains, this hard-working group brings an intensity and competitiveness that is contagious and fun to watch. The experience of playing collegiate sports should be a holistic one that provides an opportunity for each student-athlete to grow off the court as well as on the court. To that end, each year we look to provide off-court experiences that serve both as a team bonding exercise as well as provide each of our players the opportunity to experience something new. This year we are asking for your help to provide the best student-athlete experience for all players. Currently, players are responsible for funding their own practice gear, warm ups and travel gear. It is our goal, with your help to provide support to attain these resources needed to be a successful program. Our HESA students often struggle financially. This fund supports their professional growth by offsetting the costs of regional and national conferences. HESA Help HESA Celebrate our 15th Anniversary! The first class of Higher Education in Student Affairs students began in fall 2004. This crowdfunding campaign is to help our students attend regional and national professional development opportunities. As emerging professionals it is essential that they are provided with the opportunities to engage in dialogues with professionals in the field and translate the learning they are doing in the program to their futures in higher education. Attending professional development sessions, presenting workshops themselves on best practices in student affairs, and networking with colleagues in the region are important aspects of their professional development and job search process. The Higher Education in Student Affairs masters' degree students at Salem State University make a significant contribution to the field of student affairs within the greater Boston area. While enrolled in our program, many of our students are working. Our Executive Cohort students tend to maintain full-time jobs while they balance class work, practicums, families, and home responsibilities. Members of our General Cohort often hold more than one job. They are serving as graduate assistants at Salem State as well as at other colleges and universities throughout the greater Boston area. Our students are working hard to accomplish their degree and many need to take out loans to fund their education. While in graduate school our students make a significant contribution to student affairs departments throughout the region. Upon graduation the majority of them work at colleges and universities within New England. This campaign is to develop a scholarship to help our students attend professional conferences and meetings such as NASPA Region 1 in Providence, RI and ACPA in Boston. A goal of $1500 has been set so we may assist students with travel costs, conference registration, or lodging. Thank you for your support!

Prof. Elizabeth Duclos-Orsello Help Salem State University students afford a study-travel experience in Thessaloniki, Greece! THE WHAT: From May 19 – 29, 2019 eight students and Prof. Elizabeth Duclos-Orsello will be traveling to northern Greece (Thessaloniki) for 9 days of learning and collaborating with students & faculty at Aristotle University and with policymakers, civic leaders and nonprofit professionals (working with refugees) as part of the course “Crossroads Cities: Salem and Thessaloniki” which has been running since January. THE WHY: Why we are fundraising?: Because students at Salem State are struggling. Because global and intercultural study/travel experiences should not be reserved for only the well-to-do. Because most of the students traveling have never left the US before. And…critically…because raising $5,000 would dramatically impact the financial health of the 8 students who will be traveling. Despite all of the ways to keep cost of this trip down (only $2,400/student for 9 days and no extra cost for the credits) in order to expand travel-study opportunities, the cost is still a burden for many. All of the students are working paid jobs on top of full time school and are taking on some debt to have this experience--an experience which will transform them and provide them with skills and knowledge critical for the 21st century. STUDENT TESTIMONIALS from PAST COURSE/TRIP Traveling across the world was not something I had envisioned as a sophomore in college. When I got the opportunity, I took advantage of it. It was when I had settled in the beautiful, historical city of Thessaloniki that I realized that it was just more than thousands of years of history. It was about the people. The experiences. The memories. The connections. And most importantly about me. Being on this trip helped me dig deeper with myself. It was on our third to last day of the trip, we visited the Rotunda. I was looking around and I saw brown angels on the ceiling. I saw angels that had my skin color. It was an awe moment for me, but it helped me connect to the idea that people of color have navigated everywhere in the world and somehow their stories had been forgotten or hidden in history. This was my calling. This was my passion. Racial and social issues became the area in which I was excited to study and learn more about. Because of this trip it helped me flourish into the person I am today and how I identify ethnically. (Virginia) While travel has undoubtedly enabled me to simultaneously learn more about myself and become more culturally aware of my peers during my time at Salem State, the Thessaloniki Greece trip is a unique opportunity. The focus of this course and this trip centers transnational and crossroad collaboration between Salem State and University of Aristotle at Thessaloniki students. This opportunity enabled me to incorporate my love of basketball into contemporary American Studies haikus. Accounting Association The Salem State University Accounting Association is planning a trip to the American Accounting Association Southeast Region Meeting in Savannah, Georgia. This meeting is an educational conference where varying topics in accounting are presented by PhD candidates and accounting professors. Many of the presentations cover current topics that are impacting the accounting field both within the industry and the classroom. This conference represents a time to learn about accounting and also the pursuit of accounting research and education. Our members are excited to partake in this experience and share what we learn with the Salem State community. We believe that this trip will help us understand some of the most pressing accounting issues presenting themselves today from data analytics and Microsoft Power BI to new curriculum strategies and sustainability reporting. Each year we reach hundreds of students, allowing them to discover the huge variety of challenges our environment faces. Biology Department Planet Earth, the ‘blue planet’ was once thought to be endless in its open oceans and broad continents, however, we now know that the extent of our planetary home is limited. Throughout the world, Earth Day is usually celebrated in mid-April (Monday April 22nd, 2019), spring in the northern hemisphere. To fit in with the academic schedule, Salem State’s Earth Days Festival is always the second week of April, so that we do not miss a day due to Patriot’s Day. In 2019, the festival is the week of April 8th and our theme is: “Sounding the Alarm on Climate Change: Critical Actions for a Livable Planet”. The week-long event seeks to highlight the human threats nature faces, including climate change, policy deregulation, environmental degradation and habitat loss. This year’s festival includes the annual poster and art competition on the Monday, the awards ceremony on the Thursday and numerous other events throughout the week hosted by student clubs and numerous academic and non-academic departments. We will be participating in several volunteer opportunities such as distributing water and food, repainting buildings, aiding in animal and homeless shelters, and putting locals such as farmers, schools, and the general public back on their feet are among the basic necessities needed for the people of Puerto Rico to survive. Even years after the last disaster that hit the island people are still in need of major assistance. This will be a great learning opportunity and a resume booster for the LASO students, in which both leadership and professional development will be created. With the help of the Student Government Association (SGA), LASO hopes to continue with this community service trip, and make it an annual tradition. We hope to continue to focus on rebuilding the island and create relationships with locals which will guide us in the best direction to aid the community year after year. Last year we worked with organizations such as PIVE, Esperanza Boricua, Mochileando 365, and Casa Cuna while visiting Puerto Rico and it was because of that experience that we were able to build great relations and get further information about the LatinX community for our return. With this trip, we acknowledge that we will be adhering to our mission statement in the most effective way. As a public institution, our commitment to diversity is heavily highlighted within the strategic plan. Luscomb Women's Center The Florence Luscomb Women’s Center at Salem State is working to bring 10 students to the National Young Feminist Leadership Conference, which will take place March 9-11, 2019 in Arlington, Virginia. This educational opportunity makes a big impact in the lives of students who participate in the delegation and in the larger Salem State community. The conference provides an opportunity for participants to increase their knowledge about public policy and legal issues related to women and gender, gain leadership skills, and make important contacts for future internships and careers. Through skill-building and networking, students return to campus better prepared to organize and participate in campus and civic engagement activities related to women, gender, law, and social justice. Students who attend the conference are expected to infuse their campus organizations with new energy, and the experiences gained at this conference are essential to building informed and motivated student leaders at Salem State. Sponsored by the Feminist Majority Foundation, the National Young Feminist Leadership Conference includes two days of plenary sessions and panels on economic justice, reproductive justice, eco-feminism, intersectionality and identity-based activism, violence against women, immigrant rights, and global women’s rights and health. Traditional ceremony to honor senior students on their accomplishments. Nursing Pinning ceremonies date back to medieval times when the Monks who cared for the wounded soldiers in 12th century battles were pinned for their service. The Monks’ pin, a Maltese cross at that time, represented care taking. Florence Nightingale, the founder of the first nursing school, also was awarded a red Maltese cross for her work in caring for the wounded in the Crimean War. The badge that Florence Nightingale awarded to exemplary nursing students in the 1860’s was also a pin in the shape of the Maltese cross. All four sides of the cross were equal and had the appearance of angel wings. The pinning ceremony –also known here at Salem State as the recognition ceremony in nursing is the most significant event for nursing school graduates. After years of very hard work and study, students from the BSN program and the RN to BSN program who participate in this celebration say that this ceremony is more meaningful to them than their university graduation. This is the moment when a nursing faculty member- whom the class has selected- will award the nursing school pin to each nursing graduate, one at a time. This ceremony marks the first time that a nursing student finally becomes in name and title “nurse.” As faculty award the school of nursing pin to each nursing graduate individually, the placement of the pin symbolically conveys the transfer of the faculty’s nursing knowledge, skill, attitude, and professionalism. The placement of the pin also represents the time-honored tradition of welcoming the new nurse into the profession of nursing.

Through a multi-faceted partnership with Rotterdam University in The Netherlands and the City of Salem, our students are working collaboratively with students and professionals locally and around the world in bringing people of all ages together to participate in sports and games for health, well-being, and fun. About the Games: The Generation Games is an international sporting event for people of all ages. Beginning in Rotterdam in 2012, the sporting event provides a platform for different generations to cooperatively come together and compete with each other in order to serve the following purposes: (1) promoting exercise and a healthy lifestyle for people of all ages, (2) connecting different generations through sports, and (3) offering a platform to local and global organizations encouraging sports participation. The Generation Games have previously been held in Rotterdam, and Lausanne, Switzerland as part of Olympic Week amongst other places. As part of an international partnership between Salem State University, the City of Salem, and Rotterdam University in the Netherlands, we were able to bring the Generation Games to the North American continent for the first time ever in 2017. This year, we are bringing the games back to Salem for the third time! Public Health & Wellness: The Generation Games represent an opportunity to develop a solid partnership between the SMS Department (Recreation and Sport Management Concentrations), Rotterdam University, and the Salem Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Services. This partnership will again allow for the delivery of a truly world-class event while allowing for Salem State students to play a role in creating a healthier environment for the citizens of Salem and the North Shore. Additionally, the Games represent a special event that will allow for people of different generations to interact in a positive manner while providing activities that enhance physical, mental, and emotional health and social wellness. But we need your help! Salem State University’s School of Nursing (SON) has offered a short-term service learning/cultural immersion trip each March for the past three years. In the spring of 2018, the SON invited the Occupational Therapy (OT) department to expand the study abroad opportunity as an inter-professional collaboration. It was an extremely successful learning experience for all! We need your help to offer a similar inter-professional short term study abroad experience for our SON and OT students for Spring, 2019. Cultural immersion and global learning have been shown to expand cultural awareness, improve inter-cultural communication skills, improve the provision of culturally congruent care, foster advocacy skills, foster reflective ethical practice, and promote understanding of the social determinants of health and social justice in nursing and occupational therapy students. This trip provides a unique opportunity for nursing and occupational therapy students to gain critical knowledge and skills that foster improved patient care and health outcomes. Additionally, there is emerging evidence that inter-professional education positively influences the provision of patient care. This trip is only possible through robust faculty and student-led fundraising efforts and the generous donations from family, friends, alumni, and other constituents who value creative and meaningful learning experiences sponsored by Salem State University. HESA Our HESA students need financial support to attend regional and national professional development opportunities. As emerging professionals it is essential that they are provided with the opportunities to engage in dialogues with professionals in the field and translate the learning they are doing in the program to their futures in higher education. Attending professional development sessions, presenting workshops themselves on best practices in student affairs, and networking with colleagues in the region are important aspects of their professional development and job search process. The Higher Education in Student Affairs masters' degree students at Salem State University make a significant contribution to the field of student affairs within the greater Boston area. While enrolled in our program, many of our students are working. Our Executive Cohort students tend to maintain full-time jobs while they balance class work, practicums, families, and home responsibilities. Members of our General Cohort often hold more than one job. They are serving as graduate assistants at Salem State as well as at other colleges and universities throughout the greater Boston area. Our students are working hard to accomplish their degree and many need to take out loans to fund their education. While in graduate school our students make a significant contribution to student affairs departments throughout the region. Upon graduation the majority of them work at colleges and universities within New England. This campaign is to develop a scholarship to help our students attend professional conferences and meetings such as NASPA Region 1 in Providence, RI and ACPA in Boston. A memorial scholarship established to honor Chris Joyce, a beloved Salem State graduate. The entire community is saddened by the tragic death of Salem State University student Christopher Joyce. For those of us who knew Chris personally, and those who have recently learned more about this incredible young man, we know that Chris was the epitome of Salem State. Chris was a graduating senior in the business administration program with a concentration in accounting. Originally from Boston, Chris was very active on campus as part of the Brotherhood program. The program follows a multi-tiered model of best practices for helping young men of color succeed. This includes academic support via advising, tutoring, and study skills training; opportunities for leadership and community engagement; and career preparation. Chris was an important part of that fabric which relies heavily on a close-knit peer network of support. Friends and peers who knew Chris frequently cite his smile, positive energy and role-modeling as part of his legacy in their lives. Chris could often be found on campus participating in intramural games at the Gassett Fitness Center and studying between classes. His friends described him as being the first in line for his cap and gown, excited to walk across the stage at commencement and begin the next stage of his career. He hoped to go on to receive his master’s degree. His smile lit up the room, and he advocated for love and happiness. His loss has been felt by the entire Salem State community and by those who knew and loved him. In honor of Chris's short but powerful legacy, family and friends have established the Chris Joyce '18 Scholarship to be awarded to a first-generation college student at Salem State. Your contribution to this fund pays tribute an incredible young man and supports the very thing that Chris held so dear - the power of education. Chris's Salem State degree was received posthumously on Saturday, May 19, 2018, and accepted by his family.

This year the theme of our 6th annual Salem as a Safer Child Community Symposium is on mental health and illness. We have called it Continuing the Conversation - how do we get to 100%? This reflects our respect for everyone who is working to keep our youngest citizens safe and healthy. It also reflects that we need to have conversations about how we can work together to make sure that 100% of our young people receive 100% of the care and services they need to be 100% healthy. This is a huge goal. We cannot do this alone. We have to work together. The interest in this symposium has been so overwhelming that we will run a set of mental health events and symposium in the next academic year. In order to do this, we need financial support. We put on our events as a public service to the community, since we are committed to improving the health of our children. Each year we reach hundreds of students, allowing them to discover the huge variety of challenges our environment faces. Biology Planet Earth, the ‘blue planet’ was once thought to be endless in it open oceans and broad continents, however, we now know that the extent of our planetary home is limited. Throughout the world, Earth Day is usually celebrated in mid-April (Sunday April 22nd, 2018), spring in the northern hemisphere. To fit in with the academic schedule, Salem State’s Earth Days Festival is always the second week of April, so that we do not miss a day due to Patriot’s Day. In 2018, the festival is the week of April 9th and our theme is: “State of Nature: Past, Present and Future?” The full Earth Days Week 2018 schedule can be seen at www.salemstate.edu/earthday. The week-long event seeks to highlight the human threats nature faces, including climate change, policy deregulation, environmental degradation and habitat loss. This year’s festival includes the annual poster and art competition on the Monday, the awards ceremony on the Thursday and numerous other events throughout the week hosted by student clubs and numerous academic and non-academic departments. Your donation will help significantly, whether it is helping fund the 'Friends of the Earth' awards, paying for the evening reception or contributing to the prizes we provide for the students who win the poster and art competitions.

All of the organizations listed above have relayed the desperate need of volunteers and aid in Puerto Rico even months after the devastating Hurricane Maria. Distributing water and food, repainting buildings, aiding in animal shelters, and putting locals such as farmers, schools, and the general public back on their feet are among the basic necessities needed for the people of Puerto Rico to survive. It will be a great learning opportunity and a resume booster for the executive board members, it will also be an opportunity for both leadership and professional development. This is the next level of growth, both on and off campus, for the Latin American Student Organization (LASO). The current state that Puerto Rico is in has certainly gained national attention, but not enough assistance from the United States. With this trip, we acknowledge that we will be adhering to our mission statement in a way in which we have yet to fulfill before. As a public institution, our commitment to diversity is heavily highlighted within the strategic plan. Over 300 occupational therapy practitioners, ancillary health service personnel, faculty members, and students from across New England attend this exciting annual event. Provide student participants with opportunity to extend and apply classroom experiences by learning about, living with and helping people in Liberia. SSU and UMU Since 2011, nearly 30 students from Salem State University (SSU) have spent spring break in Liberia learning about and helping out people in that equatorial African nation. Students have accompanied SSU faculty from four departments. Activities in Liberia are facilitated through a formal Memorandum of Understanding between SSU and the United Methodist University of Liberia (UMU) established in 2011 and renewed in 2016. During spring semester, all students enroll in EDC 345C and learn about Liberian history, culture, education, health care, jobs and food security. Students learn the average age is 18, 32% of young people are physically stunted due to undernourishment, and 48% live in extreme poverty. Nearly 2/3’s of rural youth are illiterate. The situation for adults is equally dismal; 87% are categorized as “vulnerably unemployed”. Exacerbating this already stressed situation is the most severe Ebola outbreak ever recorded. In 2014-2015, Ebola killed one out every 1,000 Liberians. When students visit Liberia, they apply and share the knowledge gained at SSU (and elsewhere) to help Liberians help themselves. These personalized experiences in Liberia are varied and credited as a second course (EDU 500, IDS 400, BIO 408), which includes reporting on what was done and its relevance. Universally, the Liberian Experience has proven gratifying and rewarding as evidenced by the successes realized by former participants who are now teachers, technicians, nurses and finalizing advanced degrees. To help sustain this experience so other young people can participate, learn, grow and contribute we seek your assistance. Any assistance that you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated!

Join this campus-wide challenge to help ensure a good night sleep for 50 Massachusetts children living in poverty. Center for Civic Engagement Massachusetts has the top ten highest rates of homelessness in the United States. In 2016, 14.5% of children under the age of eighteen in Massachusetts were living below the poverty line. Poverty among public school students in Massachusetts has spiked in the past decade even with the improving economy and continues to affect children in the North Shore area today. The Center for Civic Engagement serves an integral partner within the greater community striving to creatively address local, regional, and global challenges. It is essential that the center and the university plays an active role in addressing social justice issues that directly impact the residents of the North Shore area. This December the center is partnering with A Bed For Every Child, The Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless, and St. Jean's Credit Union for our Vikings Build-A-Bed Challenge. This is a campus-wide initiative to help ensure a good night sleep for 50 Massachusetts children living in poverty. On Monday, December 4, 2017, in the Gassett Fitness Center we had 50 pairs of Salem State students (or alumni) from various clubs, teams, organizations, classes, etc. come together to build, sand, and paint beds in one hour. We were able to build 50 beds for children in the North Shore area. All the money raised through this crowdfunding efforts will go directly to paying for the supplies that were needed to build the beds and provide children with the necessities to have a good night sleep. Your contribution is instrumental to this cause and directly supports children in the North Shore area. No donation is too small. Nursing The School of Nursing at Salem State University graduated the first BSN students in 1974 and MSN students in 1984. This will be the second year for Short-Term Study Abroad lead by Nursing Faculty to support Cultural Immersion and Service Learning: SSU Nursing in Jamaica and will head to Jamaica March 4-11, 2018! Our partners include multidisciplinary health care at the Tropical Medicine Research Institute Sickle Cell Unit and Clinic and the School of Nursing at the UWI, Mona Campus, Jamaica. This trip supports students cultural immersion and through service learning assesses health disparities affecting disadvantaged communities around the world and creates sustainable interventions to alleviate these disparities. OUR PROJECT For our trip to Kingston, this March we have planned 3 Service Learning Projects in collaboration with the team from the sickle cell clinic: 1. The 5th annual Sweater Drive supported by our Student Nurses Association 2. The 3rd annual Ace Bandage and Wound Care Kit Drive led by senior BSN nursing students and MSN students 3. The 2nd annual gently used children’s books drive Our main objectives involve exchange of healthcare information with the students, faculty health care teams and communities through this cultural exchange by: Visiting with health teams at clinical and community sites Health Information Exchange at the School of Nursing: Our students and faculty and UWI faculty will be sharing their research projects and expertise with open time for discussions and planning for future exchanges, projects, and sustainability of this program Social and Networking time will be planned with our UWI and greater community health colleagues for further immersion into the Jamaican identity and culture. Our end goal is to provide our students from the MSN Programs in Leadership and Education; the BSN program courses in Public Health and Senior Capstone; and Occupational Therapy … with this enriched experience to meet 48 clinical hours.

Please help support our recreation and sport management students in the organization and delivery of the 2018 Generation Games! Through a multi-faceted partnership with Rotterdam University in The Netherlands and the City of Salem, our students are working collaboratively with students and professionals locally and around the world in bringing people of all ages together to participate in sports & games. About the Games: The Generation Games is an international sporting event for people of all ages. Beginning in Rotterdam in 2012, the sporting event provides a platform for different generations to cooperatively come together and compete with each other in order to serve the following purposes: (1) promoting exercise and a healthy lifestyle for people of all ages, (2) connecting different generations through sports, and (3) offering a platform to local and global organizations encouraging sports participation. The Generation Games have previously been held in Rotterdam, and Lausanne, Switzerland as part of Olympic Week amongst other places. As part of an international partnership between Salem State University, the City of Salem, and Rotterdam University in the Netherlands, we were able to bring the Generation Games to the North American continent for the first time ever. This year, we are bringing the games back to Salem for a second time! Public Health & Wellness: The Generation Games represent an opportunity to develop a solid partnership between the SMS Department (Recreation and Sport Management Concentrations), Rotterdam University, and the Salem Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Services. This partnership will again allow for the delivery of a truly world-class event while allowing for Salem State students to play a role in creating a healthier environment for the citizens of Salem and the North Shore. Additionally, the Games represent a special event that will allow for people of different generations to interact in a positive manner while providing activities that enhance physical, mental, and emotional health and social wellness. We are the students in the First Year Seminar on Philanthropy at Salem State University and aim to raise at least $500 for our university’s food pantry. The food pantry provides food, toiletries, and much more to students at Salem State who do not have access to basic items. It may be surprising to hear that so many students are hungry on campus given our large dining halls. But many students are not on a meal plan because of cost and do not have money to buy food for themselves. In a recent survey, more than one hundred SSU students reported having personally experienced hunger. Food security is critical for growing and learning students in our community. Who and What Youth at Risk (YAR) conference is the region’s only annual all-day conference for professionals who work with at-risk youth. The event features over 30 workshops, as well as keynote speakers, program exhibitions and networking opportunities. Continuing education credits are awarded in the following: EEC, CAFL, LMFT, LMHC, NASW, NLN. The Essex County Community Foundation established the YAR conference in 2000 as a response to the need for increased collaboration and coordination among the many providers of services to at-risk youth in and around Essex County. As of 2015, Salem State has taken over the program and pledges to carry on the YAR mission of trainings and outreach. The conference remains an amazing opportunity to tap the wealth of expertise in Essex County on the topic of youth at risk. It continues to be a one-of-a-kind and most anticipated annual event. In memory of her outstanding work with decades of Biology students, the Patricia Welch Award for Botany has been created in her memory. In 1985, Patti joined the Biology Department at Salem State Univerity. For 30 years she supervised the biology labs, and there is hardly a SSU biology student who has not come under her tutelage over the decades. A mentor to many, she has had an incredible lasting impact on the many students who studied with her and worked for her. One Salem State alumnae writes, "I worked for Patti back in the early 90's as a work-study student, and she was an enormous, positive influence on me, both as a scientist and as a human being. She will be missed." As a valued team member in the department, Patti's "behind the scenes" work was instrumental to the forward progress of the department, as well as the execution of the beloved Darwin Festival. A Biology Faculty Member writes, "Patti's absence from the Biology Department these past several months has been felt and will continue to be felt. I'm in my 26th year at SSU and Patti has always been there during that time. We will miss her plant sales and behind the scenes work with the Darwin Festival, not to mention her "real" work as head lab tech." She will be missed. In memory of Patti, the Biology has created the Patricia Welch Award in Botany. This award is presented to students studying the area of Botany to be used for research costs and conference participation.

Throughout his 48 years of teaching Victorian Literature at Salem State, he was always happiest in the classroom inspiring his students, many of whom he mentored long after graduation through encouraging them, reading their resumes and opening the doors of his many networks Richard not only inspired his students, but inspired all of us with his friendship and passion for the important work that we do. At this difficult time, we can be comforted by knowing how many lives he has touched. Richard set a new standard for raising funds for the Honors Program and for the General Scholarship Fund through his expertise and knowledge of wines. He was also a valued member of our Foundation Board. Richard will be missed by so many. A donation to create an endowed scholarship in Richard's name has been initiated by one of his many close, personal friends. That individual and hundreds of others know the value in ensuring that Dr. Richard Elia's name is tied to a vehicle to help ensure student success. Human Dimensions of Wildlife The Human Dimensions of Wildlife Unit of Salem State University’s Bates Center for Public Affairs promotes coexistence with wildlife through education, interdisciplinary research and communication. With a focus on marine, coastal and urban wildlife, the unit educates the public about human-wildlife issues, generates new research on public attitudes toward wildlife, informs policy makers about wildlife-related public values, collaborates with non-governmental organizations and facilitates wildlife-related civic engagement opportunities for the campus community. As a part of the Human Dimensions of Wildlife Unit, faculty members have conducted research on attitudes towards coyotes, sharks, seals and other species, sponsored Experiencing Wildlife lecture series and field trips, and held educational programs on federal and state wildlife policy. The Unit also provides internship and directed study opportunities for students. The Human Dimensions of Wildlife Unit also sponsors forums, conferences and other events bringing together students, faculty, alums, organizations and public officials with an interest in wildlife. During the 2017-2018 academic year, the unit sponsored a conference on "Elephants and Rhino in Peril" and "Compassionate Conservation: Rethinking Large Carnivore Policy in Massachusetts" We seek funds to support student involvement in human dimensions of wildlife projects, including research assistant stipends and expenses, and events that are open to the public and campus community. At Salem State University, The Brotherhood is focused on academic success and retention, The Brotherhood offers self-identified men of color resources and mentorship to reach academic and achievement goals. The Brotherhood aims to support academic persistence, and connect students directly to faculty/staff resources. The young men of The Brotherhood are hoping to attend and present at the, 'Black, Brown & College Bound Summit', which will take place in Tampa, FL this coming February. Each year, the goals of the summit are to: provide information about successful strategies, explore mentoring programs that enable the success of young men and provide the latest research of the methods higher education institutions can employ to increase access, persistence, retention and graduation rates with men of color. We are raising money to help cover costs of all aspects of travelling on this trip, including airplane tickets, hotel stay, food, and registration fees for the conference itself. The students are very excited about this opportunity and professional staff members fully understand the impact it will have on the group, but we need your help to get there. Collier Criminal Justice Scholarship End of Watch - April 18, 2013 On April 18, 2013, Patrol Officer Sean Collier was shot and killed by the two terrorists who committed the Boston Marathon bombing. Sean’s life was dedicated to volunteerism. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. has recorded a Memorial Tribute detailing his life of service to the community. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Okdbj8Sz4xc Sean’s family has elected to establish a scholarship in his name at the University, so future students can be aided in pursuing their dream of becoming a law enforcement officer. It is the family's hope that these new officers will continue Sean’s legacy of service. Sean graduated from Salem State University in 2009. While attending Salem State, he became a member of the Somerville Auxiliary Police from 2006 through 2009 where he volunteered hundreds of hours of service. He became the youngest member to attain the rank of Sergeant. After graduation, Sean became an intern at Somerville P.D. before becoming a Records Clerk in the late afternoon and evening shift. He was sponsored by Somerville PD to attend the MBTA Transit Police Academy, which he did on his own time, while still working an evening shift in the Records Bureau and assisting the Technology Officer. Sean finished top of his class academically and had the highest grade point average of any officer who graduated from the MBTA Academy. Sean became a member of the MIT Police Department in 2012. He made it his mission and his goal to gain the trust and confidence of the students. At MIT, outside of his regular duties Sean took part in the MIT Outing Club, an outdoor adventure group, where he learned the basics of mountaineering. By getting to know the students, by talking to them, by sharing memories, by hiking with them, he got to know his community. In June, 2013, Sean would have been appointed as a Police Officer for the City of Somerville, achieving a long term goal. On August 22, 2013, Sean Collier was posthumously appointed a Somerville Police Officer. Badge number 310 was assigned to him, and then retired permanently in his honor.

Meaghan Noel was in the process of completing her Senior year at Salem State when she was tragically killed in an automobile accident in March of 2015. In an effort to keep Meaghan's passion for Dance and Education alive, her family has elected to establish a scholarship in her name at the University, so future students can be aided in pursuing their passion as well. There will be a Golf Tournament held on Monday June 6th at President's Golf Club in Quincy MA to also raise funds for the Scholarship. Spots are open for individual golfers and teams as well at this point, but they are filling up fast! Our hard work has led to our making it to the National Championship, now we just need your assistance to physically get us there! Salem State Rugby Football club has been an established program on Salem State University's campus for 4 years. During our third league season we qualified to compete in the National Championship. It was not an easy journey and there were many challenges along the way. After winning our league in late October, we had a long ways to go. We traveled from Saratoga Springs, NY and eventually to Maryland for the East Coast Championship where we faced our toughest competition yet. Now, Salem State Rugby Club has the opportunity to travel to Pittsburgh, PA to compete for the National Title. We will be playing these games on April 23rd and 24th at Founders Field just outside the city. As a third year club, these games are extremely important to us. Not only will they provide an amazing and once in a lifetime opportunity for our 35 players, but it will greatly benefit the entire school. We are hoping to raise $6,000 to pay for the bus and hotel to get our team to Pittsburgh. We will ensure that all donors to our project are emailed the link for the games' video footage live-stream so that you do not miss any of the action. This project will raise funds for the Salem State University chapter of the Lambda Pi Eta Communications National Honor Society, Sigma Omega. With these funds students will be able to hold or sponsor department and university activities like professional panels, conferences, and social events. Also, we will be initiating a scholarship fund for Lambda Pi Eta-eligible students who cannot pay membership fees due to economic hardship. Why Your Support Matters Unfortunately, because Lambda Pi Eta is a student organization based on merit and is not open to all university students, the organization is ineligible to receive university funding for student groups through the Student Government Association. Due to a lack of secure funding, the group has been unable to partake in professional opportunities like speaker panels and the annual National Communication Association conference. With your help our honor students can maximize their college experience by extending their learning outside the classroom through these invaluable professional networking opportunities. About Lambda Pi Eta Lambda Pi Eta (LPH) has over 400 active chapters at four-year colleges and universities worldwide. LPH was founded in 1985 at the University of Arkansas. It became a part of the National Communication Association in 1988 and the association’s official honor society in July 1995. LPH is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), whose mission is to build a visibly cohesive community of national and international honor societies, individually and collaboratively exhibiting excellence in scholarship, service, programs, and governance. To be eligible to join the Salem State University chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, Sigma Omega, students must major in communications and have earned a minimum of 60 total credits and 12 communication credits, with a minimum of a 3.125 overall GPA and a 3.25 GPA in the major. The communications department invites eligible students to join on an annual basis. Help send a political science student to intern in Washington, D.C. for a member of the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation next summer Washington DC Congressional Intern Program For more than a decade, Salem State has sent political science students to work as interns in the Washington, D.C. offices of members of U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Students who are selected for the internship received academic credit, but more importantly, an unparalleled experience working in the front lines of the political arena. Salem State students, who have served as Congressional interns, have benefited immeasurably from the program. They have gone on to elected office, Fulbright Scholarships, campaigns, graduate school, law school and other significant achievements. These interns also have enriched our student body as they share their experiences with classmates in class discussions and with the larger campus community upon their return. Each year, 1-2 stipends are awarded to provide financial support during their internship. To be eligible to apply, a student must: be a Political Science major or minor; have a 3.0 GPA (minimum); secure an internship in Congressional Office in Washington, D.C.; receive approval for at least 3 academic credits (maximum of 12); and agree to return to SSU to discuss their internship experience with other students. Team Gear and Travel A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE Salem State Women's Soccer has qualified for the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference's post-season tournament for the past 4 seasons. With the ultimate goal of securing the MASCAC championship and an NCAA tournament berth, the Vikings play an aggressive non-league schedule, including 3 opponents who were ranked in the top 10 of New England throughout the season. In addition to the team's on-field success, the student-athletes representing this program are among the best academic performers as well. With a team GPA of 3.01 in 2014, the Vikings have maintained a high level of classroom achievement while also finding time to give back to the community. Women's soccer players have worked with Girls INC of Lynn to provide mentoring and sports clinics during the academic year, and have emerged as role models for the younger players they work with. WE NEED YOUR HELP With the drive to be the best, and recruit the best, we need to provide the best in overall student-athlete experience to the young women who choose SSU. As the economy slowly recovers we continue to face a lack of financial resources to help offer student-athletes the equipment and travel considerations that being a championship program require. Players are currently responsible for purchasing their own practice gear and warm-ups, and regularly supplement the travel per diem afforded by the department for meals. We are also limited in our travel outside of New England, as bus and hotel costs would increase the out of pocket hardship our players already face. YOUR CONTRIBUTION MAKES A DIFFERENCE As we honor this year's seniors and prepare for 2016, any contribution helps. Our goal is to provide warm-ups, practice gear, and an out of region trip as part of our August preseason. 100% of your gift will benefit the Women's Soccer Program and help to provide a superior student-athlete experience.
