Thanks for visiting!
This project page is no longer active. However, this fund is still in need of support. To make a donation please visit salemstate.edu/makeagift and direct your donation to the Dr. Richard Elia Scholarship.
Richard was a dear friend to so many of us. Throughout his 48 years of teaching Victorian Literature at Salem State, he was always happiest in the classroom inspiring his students, many of whom he mentored long after graduation through encouraging them, reading their resumes and opening the doors of his many networks
Richard not only inspired his students, but inspired all of us with his friendship and passion for the important work that we do. At this difficult time, we can be comforted by knowing how many lives he has touched.
Richard set a new standard for raising funds for the Honors Program and for the General Scholarship Fund through his expertise and knowledge of wines. He was also a valued member of our Foundation Board. Richard will be missed by so many.
A donation to create an endowed scholarship in Richard's name has been initiated by one of his many close, personal friends. That individual and hundreds of others know the value in ensuring that Dr. Richard Elia's name is tied to a vehicle to help ensure student success. Aiding students in every possible way was Dr. Elia's life's work; with your help in donating to the scholarship fund, that work can continue in perpetuity
Please note that $25,000 is the minimum to establish the scholarship, but anything raised beyond this means a greater ability to help future students through his legacy.
Thank you.
Dr. Elia inspired many students to develop and believe in their own writing abilities.
Dr. Elia was truly passionate about the subject area that he taught, which is evidenced by the fact that many of his students remember which classes they took with him so long after graduation.
Aside from teaching, the other main thing that people associate with Dr. Elia is wine. He loved wine; especially the sharing of it with those he cared for.
Dr. Elia was the longtime head of the honors program, leading the way for many students to have the space to become the best version of themselves.
Countless Salem State students have come forward to express how much of an impact having Professor Elia for a teacher had on their lives. Such an amazing legacy to leave behind.
Students with whom Dr. Elia worked felt like he was more than just a professor to them. Yes, they learned much about English and Literature, but even more so, Dr. Elia taught his students about life, and creating a good one!
