The purpose of this trip is to experience Latin culture, while executing several community service projects that we feel are important messages to bring back to the Salem State campus.
We will be volunteering with different organizations such as Esperanza Latina, Casa Cuna, Mochileando, and Fondita de Jesus. All of the organizations listed above have relayed the desperate need of volunteers and aid in Puerto Rico even months after the devastating Hurricane Maria. Distributing water and food, repainting buildings, aiding in animal shelters, and putting locals such as farmers, schools, and the general public back on their feet are among the basic necessities needed for the people of Puerto Rico to survive.
It will be a great learning opportunity and a resume booster for the executive board members, it will also be an opportunity for both leadership and professional development. This is the next level of growth, both on and off campus, for the Latin American Student Organization (LASO).
The current state that Puerto Rico is in has certainly gained national attention, but not enough assistance from the United States. With this trip, we acknowledge that we will be adhering to our mission statement in a way in which we have yet to fulfill before. As a public institution, our commitment to diversity is heavily highlighted within the strategic plan. This is a perfect opportunity for LASO to represent Salem State University on a global scale and expand our understanding of the Latin-X culture.
