The theme this year is “Climate Change and Biodiversity.”
Ecosystems on Earth—ranging from the forests of New England and the Great Lakes to the Great Barrier Reef and the Arctic tundra—are home to countless organisms that inspire awe and wonder. These ecosystems perform essential functions that benefit both humans and other living organisms, including improving air quality, pollination, nutrient cycling, food and medicine production, flood prevention, and recreation. A key factor in maintaining a healthy ecosystem is preserving biodiversity, which encompasses species diversity, genetic variation within species, and the variety of landscapes within an ecosystem. However, climate change and its wide-ranging effects are reshaping ecosystems, altering species abundance and diversity, and disrupting the critical functions these organisms provide.
In 2025, the Salem State Earth Days week aims to highlight this issue and explore the ways scientists, conservationists, and communities are working to protect and restore ecosystems.
