Travel Writing and Heritage Tourism:
Scotland United Kingdom
A wee bit of haunted history, ancestral lore and pop culture!
In Spring 2025, the English and History departments are offering a faculty-led travel-study trip to Scotland for some 15 students, who will gain first-hand experiences as we explore the country’s history, heritage and contemporary culture for 8 days during spring break.
Please note that our student travelers will be representing S.S.U.’s and U.S.A.’s finest, acting as global ambassadors as we interact with Scottish citizens. A program highlight: A meet-up with student counterparts from the University of Edinburgh to exchange ideas, perspectives and dreams.
We have students from the Honors Program; others are enrolled in the semester-long, on-campus Travel Writing (English) course or the special studies course on Heritage Tourism (History). The trip’s experiences will enhance the classroom learnings and make unforgettable memories.
Upon return, students in the courses will compose productions to inspire and inform our community. As a thank you for your generosity, you will receive production highlights.
Your tax-deductible gift will help remove financial barriers to travel for our students, many of whom carry full course loads and work to cover necessities.
We are actively raising funds through holiday pie sales and an upcoming bake sale. Our students will be active fundraisers to help defray the $3,200 cost.
Please consider donating to make this experience possible for our deserving students.
Thank you!
Professors Claire McCarthy and Margo Shea
Our Trip’s Highlights
With Edinburgh as our base, we’ll explore the land of lochs and legends, rugged landscapes, dramatic cliff-top castles and urban landscapes. It is where the raincoat and Scotch whiskey were invented, and its intrigue and superstitions inspired Shakespeare’s cursed “The Scottish Play”(Macbeth). Our private guide will show us how Scotland is represented by natives and by outsiders in literature, pop culture and tourism. Scotland’s dark history and urban and rural heritage will be our focus. Visiting with student counterparts from the University of Edinburgh will be a highlight.
